Safety in the workshop

The following workshop procedures have been established to support members’ health and safety:

  • Each member is required to assent to the Workshop Code of Conduct and The Safety Manual, which include adherence to a strict safety regime.
  • The Safety Officer and a panel of safety supervisors, all of whom are experienced in the use of most of the machines available in the shed, ensure that members comply with the Code of Conduct.
  • At least one safety supervisor is present at each workshop session.
  • Every machine is labelled with clear guidelines on its safe use.
  • No shed member is allowed to use any machine until they have been assessed by a safety supervisor as competent to use that machine. A record of which members are competent to use which machines is maintained by the Safety Officer.
  • Safety supervisors train individual members in the use of woodworking machines as well as hand tools as needed.
